Today, in the temporary capital ,Aden, the National Population Council, in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund, organized a celebration of World Population Day 2023 under the slogan “Unleashing the Power of Equality: Raising Voices of Girls and Women to Unleash the Infinite Potential of Our World.”
At the opening, the Minister of Public Health and Population, Dr. Qasim Bahibah, stressed that our country’s celebration of World Population Day is an opportunity to highlight the reflection of the war on population issues and its negative effects on demographic indicators and the process of health and social development.
Pointing to the importance of strengthening positive trends and practices regarding the current situation of the population and its repercussions due to population growth on various sectors, sustainable development, services and labor market, and the necessity of strengthening the partnership between official institutions and international organizations to provide support and population awareness.
Dr. Bahibah stated that the National Population Council is the responsible authority for conducting policies, studies, surveys, and the basic approach to population conditions in order to take economic, health, and social measures and procedures to ensure them and stressed on the keenness of the government and the Ministry of Health to enhance the presence of women and involve them in various sectors to reach the desired goal which is one of the sustainable development goals.
Najeeb Al-Humayqani , who is the General Secretariat of National Council of Population , expresses the challenges which imposed by the reality of war and the current stage ,also the need to intensify efforts to address them .
Regarding to the efforts and contributions of the National Population Council and its participation in enhancing community awareness about population and development issues.
The president of Central Statistical Organization Dr. Safa Mautee noted the role of CSO in determining accurate and clear population statistics and the importance of this in building a strong population base on the basis of which planning is made on how to deal with humanitarian aid and confront emergency response plans to recover and achieve development for the next stages.
The Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Mr. Hisham Nahiru, explained that the repercussions of war, internal displacement, the Corona virus, and natural disasters have caused major demographic changes to the population in Yemen, especially women and girls. He pointed out that an estimated 21.6 million people in Yemen are in need of humanitarian aid, half of them are Women and girls.
The Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Population Fund stressed that the Fund and its partners in Yemen are keen to respond to these needs and strengthen partnership and cooperation to address population issues and common challenges and to empower girls and women and protect their rights to dignity, health and safety in line with the global goals for sustainable development and the goals of the World Conference on Population and Development.
The celebration , which was attended by the Undersecretary of both the Ministry of Public Health and Population for the Primary Care Sector, Dr. Ali Al-Walidi, the Population Sector, Dr. Salem Al-Shabhi, the Assistant Secretary of the General Secretariat of the Prime Minister for the Programs and Plans Sector, Dr. Fadl Al-Shaeri, the Chair of the National Committee for Women, Dr. Shafiqa Al-Wahsh, and a number of general directors of the relevant ministries, included singing performances.
